Transforming Ideas into Unique Wooden Creations
Updated: Feb 2
Some of my favourite projects don’t start with a drawing; they begin with a conversation. When someone brings an idea, a problem, or even just a rough vision, my role is to listen carefully and translate that into a finished piece that feels right for them.
This shelving unit, created for 2nd Vie (Instagram handle @2nd_vie), is a great example of how customer ideas become something truly unique.
It Starts With a Conversation
Every bespoke piece begins the same way: understanding why it’s needed. For this project, the brief wasn’t just “make some shelves.” It was about:
Creating a functional display piece
Reflecting the personality and story of the brand
Using materials that met the brief of this little amazing business, giving items a second life
Something transportable that meets what is needed for a market stall
That initial conversation shapes everything that follows; proportions, materials, finish, and even how the piece will age with use. I was also blessed to have a bit of leeway, allowing me some creative license!

Translating an Idea into a Design
Once the intent is clear, I start interpreting the idea into something tangible. Questions arise:
How tall does it need to be to work in the space?
How much visual weight should it carry?
Should it feel refined, rugged, or somewhere in between?
How do I build this in the spirit of where it needs to be?
For this build, the design needed to:
Be practical for everyday use
Stand out without overpowering the products displayed on it
Feel handcrafted, not mass-produced
Be reclaimed. The goal was to not purchase materials but use what I had and what I could find.
At this stage, I had the design idea. I just wanted to ensure it was light enough to be practical but also a feature for the store.
Letting the Timber Lead
Timber has a way of influencing the final outcome if you let it. I was fortunate to find some sheets of plywood and had some scrap pieces of pine I could use as a stand. Rather than trying to hide imperfections, they were embraced as part of the story.

This philosophy applies across all my work, from custom cutting boards to larger furniture pieces. Letting the material be what it is creates a story of its own.
The Build Process

The shelving unit came together step by step:

Ensuring that the pieces were uniform
For this piece, I just used pocket hole joinery, which was perfect for this application
Thoughtful spacing and shelf depth for real-world use
Personalising the piece using French numbers for the shelves and ensuring the 2nd Vie brand was also front and center
Each stage involved small decisions that don’t always show at first glance but make a big difference in how the piece feels and functions long-term. There’s no assembly line, just deliberate, hands-on work.
Finishing With Purpose

The finish was chosen to:
Match the colour palette of the brand
Be practical while serving its intended purpose as a place to house the amazing products
Suit a retail environment where the piece would be seen and used daily

Nothing glossy or over-processed. Just a washed-out green paint and an exterior polyurethane finish to protect the pieces from heavy traffic and use.

The Finished Piece in Its Space
Once finished, the shelving didn’t just hold products; it became part of the brand’s visual identity. That’s always the goal:
A piece that feels like it belongs
Something functional that also tells a story
Furniture that supports what the customer does rather than competing with it
Seeing a finished piece in its intended space is one of the most rewarding parts of the process.

Why Custom Pieces Matter
Custom work allows for:
Design that fits real spaces and real needs
Materials chosen with intention
Pieces that last, both physically and visually
Pieces that tell a story, and I hope in this case, support the amazing story of 2nd Vie
